KrisFlyer UOB Credit Card Review And How It Compares To Amex KrisFlyer Credit Cards

KrisFlyer UOB Credit Card

For the longest time, if you wanted a Singapore Airlines Co-Brand credit card, Amex was your only option. Well things have changed and now consumers have an option now to choose between Amex or UOB KrisFlyer credit card.

How does the KrisFlyer UOB Credit Card work?

Let’s First Look At KrisFlyer UOB Credit Card’s value proposition

  • 1.2 miles per dollar spent
  • 3 miles per dollar spent on Singapore Airlines, SilkAir, Scoot and KrisShop.
  • 3 miles per dollar spent on dining, online food delivery, online shopping, and public transport – no spend cap, but you only receive the bonus miles 2 months after card membership year (we’ll talk more about this later in the article)
  • Annual Fee S$192.60 waived for the first year
  • S$30,000 income requirement

In case you’re wondering, your earn rate could increase further when you stack it with your KrisFlyer UOB Savings Account (similar to how the KrisFlyer UOB Debit Card works)

Ongoing Promotion till 30th June 2019

Existing UOB Credit Card Members will receive 5,000 KrisFlyer miles when you make a first spend of S$5 within 2 months.

In addition to the 5,000 KrisFlyer miles that existing UOB Credit Card Members receive, new to bank Card Members will get to choose between:

1) Additional 7,000 KrisFlyer miles
or
2) A complimentary SIA/SilkAir ticket to Bangkok, Lombok or Penang

What are the watch outs for the KrisFlyer UOB Credit Card

Although this card sounds amazing but there are some terms and conditions you need to keep in mind.

’Accelerated Miles’ (miles earned from listed categories) will post within two months after your card’s membership year. That is to say, a lump sum of the miles you’ve earned will only be deposited to your card at the 2 months after your card’s annual membership.

Taking this scenario as an example:
You spend $100 on dining during the first month of your card membership

  • In total you should be earning 300 miles
  • However only 120 miles will be credited in the subsequent month
(i.e. base earn rate of 1.2 miles per dollar)
  • And 180 miles will only be credited 13 months later
(i.e. bonus miles deposited 2 months after card annual membership)

In addition, KrisFlyer miles are calculated in blocks of S$5 spent. If you’ve spent S$4.99, you’ll earn nothing in return. To put it simply, this is how you’ll earn your rewards:

  • General expenditure – 6 miles per S$5 spent
  • SIA-related expenditure – 15 miles per S$5 spent

Our final thoughts about KrisFlyer UOB Credit Card

While the no earn cap for the 3 miles per dollar Everyday Spend earn rate is attractive, the delay in crediting the accelerate miles by up to 14 months is a big turn off to us. In addition any earn rate publicized is actually lower due to the awarding miles are based on blocks of S$5 spend. For example,  S$8 spend will earn 6 miles (the earn rate is ~0.75 mile per dollar for that transaction)

Unless you’re prepared to go through all the fine print, this card is a no no for us.
